15h30 – SALMON ELLA
Salmon Ella is a result of the 2017 Girls+ Rock Ottawa’s Rock Camp for Women+. Since that June weekend, Cynthia, Dani, Hannah, and Katie have been writing music with quirky melodies and uncomfortably honest lyrics to get to the heart of their experiences. Influenced by Warpaint, Bikini Kill, Courtney Barnett, and Fiona Apple, they played their first show in October 2018 and are quickly making a mark on the Ottawa music scene. Sometimes absurd, sometimes ethereal, their music will have you saying “I don’t know what I just listened to, but I think I liked it!”.
16h15 – INLAND ISLAND
Inland Island creates lyrically driven songs from a place of introspection and positivity, within a style of music that is clear and easy to listen to, but dense and full of surprises which reward the close listener.
‘Dreamt’ is the third full-length release from the Montréal-based project since 2016. Following ‘Step Right Up’ (2017) and ‘Zsa Zsa’s Window Opens Slowly’ (2016, released by Egg Paper Factory), ‘Dreamt’ showcases a mix of pop, folk, rock and instrumental/ambient music. Led by singer/songwriter Avalon Rossignol-Tassonyi, the album features contributions from Nick Nausbaum (Jaunt), Laura Jeffery (Fountain) and Ola Kado. The band’s live presentation switches between solo sets and full band performances featuring a rotating cast including Ellen Belshaw and Nick Nausbaum. Inland Island has appeared at Festivals such as Pop Montréal and Halifax Pop Explosion, with live dates to be announced for 2019 and many new recordings in the works.
17h00 – LUNA LI
Luna Li has been called the garage rock princess of Toronto (Mick Magazine), performing regularly with her female-centric 4-piece band throughout Ontario and Quebec. She has played shows and festivals such as Canadian Music Week, Slut Island festival, NXNE, and recently joined Born Ruffians as direct support on the Ontario leg of their North American tour.
With over 14 years of classical piano and violin training, Luna brings a unique musical sensibility to the rock genre; playing both distorted guitar and violin with a looping pedal resulting in a “dreamy romp through some beautiful melodies and heartbreaking lyrics” (Deli Magazine).
Luna released her new single, Silver into Rain, with an accompanying music video in June 2018. The song marks the first follow-up to her debut EP, Opal Angel. In 2017, Luna won the SOCAN Foundation Award for Young Canadian Songwriters with her single Star Stuff.
Bringing a much-needed strong female presence to the Toronto music scene, Luna Li is unabashedly herself. Look out for new music in 2019.
